OLD POND COLLECTION
The first and most often over-looked area of the arboretum is what is known as the "Old Pond Collection". Over the years this area has been used as an experimental platform for many species not found in Montana or even the Rocky Mountain region. It does not have the luxury of protection or a microclimate as it is more open to the elements. As a result there have been many species that proved ill to the harsh Montana climate, but nevertheless the testing will continue. Past specimens have included Persimmon and Bald Cypress and current specimens include Black Walnuts, American Plum, Korean Locust and Sycamores. The area does have the luxury of the pond and water from the Canyon Creek Ditch. Trees fed from these two sources have been able to thrive.
