Chickadee Trail

22352HD4-1.png

Bird watching, also known as ornithological pursuit, reaches its peak along Chickadee Trail, The Dell and the Foster Waterfowl Refuge.  Best viewing times are mornings and early spring when birds return from over-wintering and nesting commences. Along this trail you can find not only Chickadees but Wrens, Juncos, Goldfinch, Blue Jays, Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Warblers and Owls. Because of the overstory of Cottonwoods and an abundant berry crop, birds find this area of the Zoo irresistible. Some of the older Cottonwoods have become likely homes for Woodpeckers and Blue jays due to hollowed out trunks and wonderful perching spots especially for Owls. The arboretum has introduced more ornamental shrubs and small trees to this area to enhance the bird population. The nearby Foster Refuge and Canyon Creek offer a great water source which also attracts bird life in this area of the grounds.
